If a lady dwarf is single when she comes into your fort, she's not going to crank out any babies until she finds her own Urist McBachelor, and even then, what are the chances of that happening? Weddings aren't that common (I've never gotten a wedding announcement), and you should have her constantly training, leaving no time for her to find Mr. Dwarves are purely monogamous they only mate with a dwarf they're married to. Take a look at the mechanics for dwarven reproduction. Especially since discriminating by gender alone cuts out many dwarves who wouldn't take an infant into battle anyway.
